About Caddo National Wildlife Refuge

Caddo National Wildlife Refuge, located in northwestern Louisiana along the Red River, encompasses roughly 34,350 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, swamps, lakes, and bayous. Established in 1967, the refuge was created primarily to provide habitat for wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds. Its diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife, including deer, alligators, bobcats, various amphibians, and over 250 species of birds, making it a premier destination for birdwatching. The refuge features large natural lakes such as Caddo Lake, scenic waterways, and forested wetlands that fluctuate seasonally, shaping the habitat and the wildlife experiences available to visitors. Recreational opportunities center on fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and wildlife observation. Several boat ramps provide access to the lakes and bayous, and the refuge includes a designated canoe trail through forested waters. Hiking is limited but includes a few small walking trails and observation platforms for wildlife viewing. Caddo offers a peaceful natural setting with good access from nearby towns, making it popular for photographers, paddlers, and anglers. Its location within the Red River floodplain gives it important ecological connections to regional natural processes. Visitor facilities include a refuge office with informational displays and campsites nearby outside the refuge boundary. Overall, Caddo offers a chance to experience Louisiana’s extensive wetland wildlife habitat up close in a relatively undeveloped, quiet environment.
